On February 18, around five dozen friends of the City Choir of Washington came together from across the country for a virtual wine tasting fundraising event. City Choir partnered with Barrel Oak Winery in Delaplane, Virginia for a fun-filled and informative evening. Barrel Oak Winery’s owner, Brian Roeder, led the tasting. Participants chose from 2, 3, or 4 bottles of the winery’s award-winning whites and reds, and learned about everything from the chemistry of wine-making, to why certain food pairings work better than others (pro tip: brownies and Virginia’s iconic Norton wine are a match made in heaven!), to the story of how Justice John Marshall—whose estate borders on Barrel Oak Winery land—saved the United States with Madeira wine. A grand time was had by all, and one (admittedly slightly tipsy) participant was heard to exclaim, “This is the most fun I’ve ever had on a Thursday night!”

For those who missed the fun, Brian of Barrel Oak Winery says that the winery and farm brewery are hosting guests (kids and dogs are warmly welcomed) outdoors at safe, socially-distanced picnic tables, firepits, and bubbles. They also can ship wine within the Greater Washington area, and to many other states as well.

Participants tasted: 2018 Barrel Chardonnay | 2017 Viognier | 2017 Meritage | 2017 Estate Norton
