BREAKING: Erin Freeman Signs Contract Extension; Washington National Opera Orchestra to Appear in City Choir Concerts; 2024-25 Season Announcement

The City Choir of Washington Announces Extension of Erin Freeman’s Contract, its 2024–25 Season, and Special Appearances by the Washington National Opera Orchestra and Wolf Trap Opera Studio Artist Alumni.

 Washington, D.C.  (July 25, 2024) The City Choir of Washington is thrilled to announce that Artistic Director Erin Freeman has extended her contract through the 2026–27 season. Freeman says, “I’m excited to continue working with City Choir! In addition to being a top-notch musical organization, it’s a true community, doing great work in the DC area and beyond.”  

This news comes as City Choir announces its 2024–25 season, “By the Numbers,” featuring music by Haydn, Bizet, Ellington, Gershwin, Bach, Beethoven, Bonis, and much more; appearances by the Washington National Opera Orchestra; continued partnerships with the National Symphony Orchestra and Wolf Trap Opera; and engagement work that uplifts and inspires audiences and singers alike.

The City Choir of Washington’s 2024-25 season: 

7 Days of Creation  Under the leadership of artistic director Erin Freeman, City Choir will present a spectacular multidimensional production of Franz Joseph Haydn’s The Creation featuring the Washington National Opera Orchestra, Esther Tonea, soprano, Dashiell Waterbury, tenor, and Andrew Adelsberger, baritone. Sunday, November 24, 2024 at 5 p.m. at National Presbyterian Church, Washington, DC.

Bizet’s Carmen at 150  An evening of opera choruses and scenes will bring all the fiery excitement of Georges Bizet’s Carmen (and more!) to life. This program stars soloists from Wolf Trap Opera’s Studio Artist program and features the Washington National Opera Orchestra. Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 5 p.m. at Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall, Alexandria, Virginia.

From Irving Berlin to Dolly Parton: 100 Years of American Song  A celebration and expansion of the Great American Songbook and America’s rich choral tradition. With music by Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington, Elaine Hagenberg, Moses Hogan, Cole Porter and more, this concert celebrates the rich history and future of American song. Sunday, March 23, 2025 at 5 p.m. at Church of the Epiphany, Washington, DC.

3 B’s: Beethoven’s Mass in C Major, a tour-de-force for chorus, orchestra, and soloists, will be paired with Bach’s first cantata (BWV 4, Christ lag in Todesbanden), and motets by French Romantic composer Mélanie Bonis for City Choir’s grand season finale. Sunday, June 1, 2025 at 5 p.m. at National Presbyterian Church, Washington, DC.


In addition, the City Choir will continue its engagement work with the City Singers, and enter into the third year of partnership with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), leading interactive “Sound Health Friday” events at the Kennedy Center, focused on singing and wellness and offering lively context for NSO matinee performances. Patrons can also catch City Choir at a Nats game on Sunday afternoon, September 29, and in Brazil as guests of the Mozarteum Brasiliero orchestra in June 2025.
